Your book often deals with funny stories, but on a more serious note, do you feel like this collection of stories gets at the heart of what it's like to travel to Africa? "It's been a few years since I was last in Africa, but I'm still in contact with plenty of people and after the bogus Zimbabwe elections this year I did write a letter to my Senator requesting America impose sanctions on the country. I think the stories give an insight to Africa's people and culture. Travel is a very individual matter, and if you're inclined to travel in a climate that's air-conditioned, where the local currency is American Express and the local drink is a dry vodka martini, then this book's travel observations may seem alien. Yes, there are funny stories and I love to travel. Often, more so than reaching the destinations. Think about it: you get to meet other people, a driver is doing the work so you can sit back and enjoy the scenery. But remember there are serious issues to travel, like a woman transporting water to her family. She carries water on her head, you see her neck bend outward behind her like a crossbow. Ten liters of water weighs twenty-two pounds, a fifth of a woman's body weight. A story like that goes straight to the heart of what it's like to travel in Africa." 5) As you've been giving readings, what's been people's responses to the book? What sort of discussions do you hope emerge as a result of this book? "It depends what's been written in the New York Times the previous week, as people ask me to comment on an article of a situation. This could be Zimbabwe's land grab, an election in Ghana, Ivory Coast troubles. Since the World Cup in June, there has been a lot of interest in Senegal's and Nigeria's soccer teams.
