Rise of the Sistah Agent Series: Kimberly T. Matthews/Kissed Publications

© Dee Y. Stewart

Last year, I began to seek literary agent referrals. Two friends in the writing community- Christian fiction, author, Jacqueline Thomas and RAW SISTAZ Book Club President, Tee C. Royal both referred me to the same person-Kimberly T. Matthews. For me I found that coincidence very interesting and so, I had to make contact with her and she has been kind enough to grant me an interview to post here. I hope you enjoy!

Writing to see what the end gon' be,

Dee

How old is Kissed Publications?

My Agency was founded mid 2003 and officially opened its doors for submissions and clients on January 1, 2004. Since that time I have been able to secure 10 clients of varied genres

What is your background in publishing?

I got into self-publishing several years ago, and for anyone who has ever gone on that journey can attest to the fact that you learn a lot . . . a whole lot. You learn so many facets of the business, usually the hard way. In short - I published a couple of titles, authored a few ghostwriting projects, and did some freelancing writing.

Why did you decide to start your own literary agency?

After publishing my own titles, I began hosting and facilitating several workshops for individuals who were writing books but were unsure of what to do next. I found that there were so many people who had no clue of what they should be doing. They all were sincere, but just had no knowledge and understanding of basic practices and expectations. I was constantly being asked for assistance in seeing their dreams come to fruition. This drove me to wanting to take a more active and structured approach in assisting others in becoming published.

Were there many black and/or women agents to guide you along the way?

Various people in various roles have given me much needed support. Portia Cannon of A. N. Experience has been a phenomenal colleague and pillar of support for me, as well as former editor Anita Diggs. There have definitely been many others, but since you only asked about agents, I will use that as an escape from forgetting to mention people who definitely have assisted me and would otherwise be worthy of mention! (LOL!)

You take submissions what genres?

I primarily look for women's commercial fiction and chick lit, although I am open to romance, urban, and inspirational non-fiction. I am not representing mystery, horror, poetry, young adult, or children's works at the time.
