Initially set in North Carolina, the main character, Ashela Jordan is left alone in the world through her mother's death, with only her grandmother to care for her. So far sounds like a regular story, right? Not after Williams gets through sprinkling on her talent dust to create such a captivating work.

Ashela drops the small town life for a move to the Big Apple, praying that her past will remain there - in her past. Ashela learns the ropes of being a New Yorker and of surviving the crucial climb into the big leagues of the music industry. Ashela's love intrest is Sam Ross...Mr. Big of the industry. Power and an astute business mind combined with looks, charm and charisma, Sam Ross is anything but deniable. The two characters learn that they are not incapable of loving as either of them had thought.

Robin Williams is unlike any other writer's for this simple fact. Usually writer's are told to show and not tell. Noticeably in the first half of the book there was a lot of "telling" going on in the book which is more surprising because you become even more enthralled into the story with every page turned. For a writer to take a classic literary "no-no" and create a "yes-yes" shows her abilities in a most complementive light.
