It is the beginning of the year and I am making a plan to start exercising regularly. I know that I am not alone because I have been looking at the news reading newspapers and seeing article upon article about this subject. The real question is, will I stick to my goal of becoming an exercise queen or will I give up by the middle of the year.
I wonder what excuse will I use this year, no time, to many thing that come first, work and a list of things that I have not thought of yet. These are all factors that I know I can overcome yet I always seem not to. According to an article in the March 2000 issue of IDEA Health & Fitness Source it talks about the reasons why people stop or don’t exercise. “People avoid or discontinue an exercise program for two main reasons: either they don’t understand their own motivation for exercising, or they succumb to barriers that regular exercises are able to overcome. Some of the barriers to staring an exercise program are intimidation, embarrassment, physique anxiety, self-esteem and self-efficiency. Some of the barriers for maintaining an exercise program are outcome fixation, boredom and perceived lack of time” (Kimiecik, 2000). I know that I have to overcome these mentally barriers because exercise is important. I am not even talking about the obvious fact that the more you exercise the better you begin to look. What I am talking about is the fact that exercise help you become healthier and may help you fight diseases such as obesity and diabetes, a serious threat within the African American community. Going back to the issue of internal barriers, the article that I referenced earlier it also talks about how to get over some of the barriers such as adapting a lifestyle which includes exercise and developing a area in your own home of exercise. Part of my exercise plan for this year is to develop an exercise plan at home. I am not confident enough to go to a gym and I don’t have the time to wait for machine because the gym around my home is pretty crowded. Luckily now with the help of the internet you can locate information to help you develop an at home exercise plan that works for you. So I will begin the ritual of starting my exercise routine. I have to, for my health and well being. I wish everyone else luck with their new year exercise resolutions. Hopefully we will all get where we want to be. Go To Page: 1 2
