These are some of definitions that you should know within the world of yoga:
ASANAS- yoga postures. (Dupler, 2001) CHAKRAS- wheels. (Murray, 1995) CROWN CHAKRA- the spine (Cushman, 1995) DHARAMA- concentration. (Salovaara, 2001) DHYANA- meditation. (Salovaara, 2001) DYANA- quiet, clarify and discipline the mind. (Dupler, 2001) KINGLY- raja yoga exercises of a psychological nature. (Murray, 1995) MULA BANDHA- this is a traditional hatha yoga energy raising practice. It involves contracting and lifting the muscles of the pelvic floor. (Cushman, 1995) NADIS- the conduits of the psychic nervous system also called channels. (Murray, 1995) NADI SHODANA- cleansing of the nadis. This is the intermediate series of Ashtanga Yoga. (Cushman, 1995) NIYAMA- inner integrity. (Salovaara, 2001) PRANA- life force. (Dupler, 2001) PRANAYAMA- the science or control of breathing. (Dupler, 2001) PRATYAHARA- sensory withdrawal. (Salovaara, 2001) RISHIS- seers. (Murray, 1995) SAGES- homeopathic doctors in India. (Murray, 1995) SAMADHI- radial changes in consciousness that culminate in the ecstatic meditative state. (Cushman, 1995) STHIRA BHAGA- the fourth advanced series of Ashtanga Yoga. (Cushman, 1995) SUSHUMNA NADI- the central energy channel in the spine. (Cushman, 1995) TAPAS- heat. (Cushman, 1995) UDDIYANA BANDHA- kicks in almost automatically as a side effect of a strong mula bandha. The lower belly below the navel sucks inward firming the abdomen and drawing the breath up to expand the rib cage, chest and lungs. (Cushman, 1995) UJJAYI BREATHING- the victorious breath which is a classic pranayamam technique in which the breath passes across the back of the throat with a sibilant hiss. (Cushman, 1995) VINYASA- flowing postures linked by the breath. (Cushman, 1995). VORTICES- chakras. (Murray, 2001) YAMA- moral observance. (Salovaara, 2001) YOGA- come from a Sanskrit work which means you or union. (Dupler, 2001). YOGA CHIKITSA- yoga therapy. This is the primary series in ashtanga yoga.
