I was talking to a group of women in a doctors office and one of the women mention that she is going to start wearing her hair in a natural style after years of relaxing her hair. When I heard her say that I started to think about the women of color I see that wear their hair that way, whether it is in locks or a afro.
I talked to some of my girlfriends who also wear their hair natural after years of relaxing and they tell me how much easier it is to care for. They say they can just get up and go in the morning. They rave about the fact that they are now free of the constant process of relaxing their hair every four weeks. Personally, I relax my hair and I have been doing it for years. And sometimes I wonder what would I look like without the straightness that comes from relaxing my hair. How who I look with locks or twists, I have always loved that style on other women. But in the end I always go back to relaxing my hair because it is the way that I choose to wear my hair. Now if you want to try to wear your hair naturally I say great. But if you want to wear this look you have to consider changing your hair care routine during this transition period: Shampooing- wash your hair once a week to once every two weeks. You may also want to clean your scalp between washings. Conditioning- use a hot oil treatments once a month and you must definitely use a leave-in conditioners after every wash your hair. Also, do not use super-rich creamy conditioners if you are use hair pieces during the transition time because it cake up where the added on hair meets your natural hair. Combing Out- always use a wide tooth comb, and comb the hair while its wet. Divide strands into sections for manageability. Heat Styling- press only clean, virgin hair and use pressing cream. Also avoid extreme heat because it will cause the hair elasticity and cause breakage. Cutting- the amount to cut is relative to the amount of new hair growth and breakage. So if you are considering this style I say that is great. And you never know you may have found a way to wear your hair that you love better than your last hairstyle. Article Edwards, Pamela.
