This article and articles to follow in this column are designed to arm you with sales-tested tools that you can use to start your own home-based advertising newspaper.
The telephone talks that you use should flow quite easily after you have practiced them several times. Keep in mind that your first objective with any telephone talk is to get all the way through the talk. You do this by speaking in a soft, relaxed manner so the person on the other end of the line will get a mental image of a friendly, pleasant individual. Never, never rush the delivery of you talk. To talk too rapidly encourages interruptions. Next, don't hesitate to go back and repeat yourself to make sure that your message is clear, and always stick to the approved standard telephone talk that you have developed for yourself. In other words, if your prospect doesn't seem to understand some particular thing that you've said, go back and read that section of the talk again. But, at the same time, we recommend that you DO make use of what we call "interruption-stoppers". These are nothing more than stock phrases which you may ad-lib between sentences or thoughts contained in the talks...phrases such as "You see Mrs. Jones," or "As I was saying, Mrs. Jones," etc. We recommend that you use such phrases to keep your telephone talk running without a break, and still give yourself time to catch your breath. You can deliver a telephone talk better if it's in front of you at eye-level, try pasting it, (or copying it), on a manila folder that can be set upright in front of you. Good Selling!! James D.
