Being Adventurous Requires a Healthy Lifestyle


If you are the type of person who enjoys participating in adventure sports like snowboarding and mountain biking, then you should realize that if you want to continue to do these sports as you get older you'll need to stay fit and healthy.

When you're young it's easy to have energy, stamina and quick recoveries. But time will catch up with you, so you are better off being prepared.

There are a few basic principles that you can follow to stay healthy and fit. I'm not a doctor, so these are just suggestions. Please check with your doctor to make sure that you are meeting the right health and fitness requirements.

For optimum health, here are some tips:

  1. Drink eight glasses of water per day
  2. Drink alcohol in moderation (less than 2 glasses per day)
  3. Cut back on caffeine and sweets
  4. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables
  5. Eat minimal saturated fat (butter, oil, fried foods)

Here are some tips for staying fit:

  1. Excercise regularly; preferably do cardiovascular exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week
  2. Stretch; flexibility is important
  3. Weight lifting is a good way to prevent osteoporosis and strengthen muscles
  4. Yoga is great for strength, flexibility and relaxation
  5. Find some type of exercise you enjoy doing; you're more likely to stick with it

Here are some tips for optimal nutrition:

  1. Follow the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations to ensure that you are getting all the nutrients you need to nourish your body-
  2. Breads and Cereals: 6-11 servings daily
  3. Fruit: 2-4 servings daily
  4. Vegetables: 3-5 servings daily
  5. Meat & Meat Alternatives (beans, nuts, soy): 2-3 servings daily
  6. Dairy Products (milk, cheese, yogurt): 2-3 servings daily

For good mental health, here are some tips:

  1. Make time to relax every day, even if it's only 5 minutes
  2. Try meditation, it's a great way to get in touch with your inner self
  3. Yoga: not only does it give your body a great physical workout, it also works the mind
  4. Find a hobby you enjoy, this way you'll have something you look forward to doing in your spare time and it will lift your spirits as well as relax your mind
  5. Get a pet: animals are very comforting and therapeutic
  6. Take a deep breath: a wonderful way to relax is to just sit and take five long, deep breaths
  7. Take a hot bubble bath, put on some soft music, light some candles, pour a glass of wine...and let your troubles slip away

    Everyone has different needs, so I encourage you to find out what your health and fitness needs are and start following them now...before it's too late!
