Bay Area Outdoors

Whether you enjoy camping, trail running or hiking--the San Francisco Bay Area has plenty of outdoor activities to offer. The Wilderness Press can help you get the most out of what the Bay Area has to offer through their numerous outdoor books. Here are just a few to get you started:

Camping & Backpacking the San Francisco Bay Area: This 366-page book by Matt Heid covers camping and backpacking in the North Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains, and East of the Bay. Each location has information about campgrounds, crowds, reservations, trails, activities, contact information and how to get there.

Trail Runner's Guide to San Francisco Bay Area: This 312-page book by Jessica Lage covers 50 runs around the Bay. There is a Bay Area map with the locations numbered so that you can get a good overview of the area. The trails are divided into the following sections: San Francisco, Marin County, East Bay, and Peninsula. Each trail listings has distance, time, type, high/low point, difficulty, use, maps, and area management information. There are also directions to the trail head, a topo map of each trail, info about the trail, alternate routes and trail notes.

Peninsula Trails: Outdoor Adventures on the San Francisco Peninsula: For those living on or wanting to explore the Peninsula, this 374-page book by Jean Rusmore, Frances Spangle, and Betsy Crowder provides information about hiking, biking, or horseback riding, along the Peninsula. Each listing includes a map, trail conditions, facilities, rules, how to get there, trail distance, time, elevation loss, connecting trails, and trail notes.

For those wanting to take a bit of a road trip outside of the Bay Area, Sequoia National Park is worth the drive. Be sure to take along the Sequoia National Park: A complete Hiker's Guide book. This 266-page book by Mike White covers things like flora and fauna, geology, climate, map, fees, and permits. It is divided into West Side Trips and East Side Trips. There is very detailed information in an easy to read format that lists distance, elevation, season, use, maps, introduction, directions to trailhead, and description.
