Avid mountaineer Anthony Greenbank has written a useful book for any adventurer called The Book of Survival: The Original Guide to Staying Alive in the City, the Suburbs or the Wild Lands Beyond.

The book is broken down into the following categories for easy reference. I've listed an example survival tip from each category:

Too Lonely: How to send an SOS using a mirror
Too Crowded: How to avoid being crushed in a crowd
Too Dry: Searching for water
Too Wet: Swimming for survival
Too Bright: Lightening protection
Too Dark: Moving in the dark
Too Cold: Finding shelter
Too Hot: Fire-fighting tips
Too Low: Climbing up
Too High: How to get down
Too Fast: Avalanche survival
Too Slow: What to do when stranded
Too Full: Basic terror tactics survival
Too Empty: Living off the land

The book is full of helpful illustrations that could possibly save your life.

Whether you're going backcountry skiing, rock climbing or sailing--or even just going for a walk around the block--you never know when disaster might strike. It could be a freak lightening storm, an attacker, or an avalanche--there are things you can do to better your chances of surviving. But you need to know what those things are. It could be something as simple as packing a mirror in your backpack while hiking or knowing what kind of berries are safe to eat. Knowledge will save your life.

Don't just read this book, memorize it. And definitely take it with you on every adventure.
