Whether you're mountain biking or trail running, the key to getting an efficient workout is by monitoring your heart. If you're not working hard enough, you're wasting your time. You want to make the most of every minute you spend working out to get the maximum results.

The best way to do that is by using a heart rate monitor. These days, they can also tell you everything from how many calories you burn to acting as a coach during workouts.

Polar ("http://www.polarusa.com") makes numerous styles of heart rate monitors to suit all types of athletic endeavors--whether you're trying to lose weight or train for an adventure race. Here's a look at ones that can be used for both biking and running.

Polar S150:

Pro:

  • Reasonably priced: SRP$119.99
  • Running and cycling settings
  • Computer connection features

    Con:

  • Requires some time to read the operating manual and get it set up
  • Must wear chest strap while exercising

The Bottom Line: This is a good entry-level heart rate monitor for recreational or competitive athletes.

    Product Description:

  • Target heart rate zones with visual and audible alarm
  • Timer
  • Maximum/average heart rate
  • Recovery measurement
  • Bike speed average and max
  • Total exercise time
  • Time of day
  • Stopwatch

Review: For those not wanting to spend an arm and a leg, this is a good choice. Although it does take some time to set the monitor to meet your criteria, and a bit of patience with learning how to navigate through the various menus, once you're up and going this monitor will make a marked difference in your workouts.

One feature that is useful is the zone alarm, which beeps when you go out of your target heart rate zone.

Mounting the monitor to the bike proved to be a bit of a challenge, but eventually it was installed and seemed to be working properly.

One plus is that for those who don't want to personalize the workouts, but just want some general information, there is a "BasicUse" mode that is turned on and off with the push of a button.

For those wanting more detailed information, the "Exercise Set" mode is available, which allows users to use three timers, three heart rate limits and a recovery calculation.

All-in-all, a good purchase for those wanting to monitor their workouts more closely.

    Polar S720i:

  • Wireless ECG accurate heart rate monitoring

    Con:

  • A bit pricey: $319.99
