Why Consistency Is ImportantIf your child chooses to ride without a helmet, they don't ride for a week. Implementing consequences for all infractions of rules can be challenging for parents. We're tired... We'll just let it slide this once... We don't want to be as tough as our own parents were... Our child is nagging us to be lenient this once... In the end, however, children who joined our families through adoption, need us to be vigilant in enforcing our family rules and expectations. They need it to help their brains develop cause and effect thinking. They need it to help them learn how to live in a family. And, even though it may not seem like it at first, by being consistent, eventually they will master the rules, and learn to live helpful, successful, empathetic lives.
