When we adopt children, their lives are somewhat more complicated than those of children who were not adopted. They may incur additional emotions due to their early years, to the fact that they're adopted, or the adjustment to their new home. Below are a few books that will help children deal with their emotions and learn about themselves.
An excellent children's book about loss and grief. Your adopted child deals with loss whether or not they talk about it. Sad Isn't Bad: A Good Grief Workbook, by Michaelene Mundy, 1998. Memory Maker by Lara Shelter, Bodega Books, 1999 Don't Rant and Rave on Wednesdays!
The Children's Anger-Control Book by Adolph Moser, Landmark Editions, 1994. List Yourself for Kids: Listmaking as a Fun Way to Get To Know Yourself by Ilene Segalove and Charlotte Blumenfeld, 1999. The Absolutely True, Positively Awesome Book About Me! by Jessica Wilber, Free Spirit Publishing, 1999. Consider buying one or more of these books for your at-home library. Then, keep your eye out for other books that will help your child learn to deal with her many emotions, and to get to know herself better. For more adoption information, check Older Child Adoption
