When we adopt children, their lives are somewhat more complicated than those of children who were not adopted. They may incur additional emotions due to their early years, to the fact that they're adopted, or the adjustment to their new home. Below are a few books that will help children deal with their emotions and learn about themselves.

Aarvy Aardvark Find Hope, by Donna O'Toole, 1988.

An excellent children's book about loss and grief. Your adopted child deals with loss whether or not they talk about it.

Sad Isn't Bad: A Good Grief Workbook, by Michaelene Mundy, 1998.

A workbook to help your child through times of sadness. Their sadness might be a recent issue such as moving, or a lifelong issue such as their adoption.

Memory Maker by Lara Shelter, Bodega Books, 1999

A scrapbook for you and your child to do together beginning at school age. Places to write memories and packets to keep papers and projects. For ages 4 - 9.

Don't Rant and Rave on Wednesdays! The Children's Anger-Control Book by Adolph Moser, Landmark Editions, 1994.

Discusses anger and appropriate and inappropriate ways to manage it. Cartoon-like illustrations. Ages 8 - 12.

List Yourself for Kids: Listmaking as a Fun Way to Get To Know Yourself by Ilene Segalove and Charlotte Blumenfeld, 1999.

Fun questions for children to answer about themselves, their family, their interests, and more. Ages 8 - 12.

The Absolutely True, Positively Awesome Book About Me! by Jessica Wilber, Free Spirit Publishing, 1999.

It fits into a pocket and is filled with tips and writing prompts. Ages 9 - 12.

Consider buying one or more of these books for your at-home library. Then, keep your eye out for other books that will help your child learn to deal with her many emotions, and to get to know herself better.
