I is for 'It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas'

Well, the middle of November has come and gone, and up here in the North Country we've had a snowfall or two. We've already been skiing and the firewood is ready for the long, cold winter.

All the cold and white stuff certainly puts us in the holiday spirit. So, I thought I'd offer a few holiday things to do if you find yourself up this way between now and December 25.

Festivals of Trees

If you are looking for a Festival of Trees to visit, there are many to be found. Closest to us, and our favorite, is the annual North Country Festival of Trees which is held in the Fort William Henry Convention Center in Lake George (click on Special Events to see the Festival info). This is the 11th year for the festival, which used to be held at the Queensbury Hotel in downtown Glens Falls. It is a charity event for the Prospect Child & Family Center in Queensbury.

The North Country Festival of Trees opens on Wednesday, November 27, the night before Thanksgiving, with a Gala Preview Reception. At this event you can bid on the Festival trees and displays and if you are lucky, you might just get to take one of the beautiful theme-decorated trees home for Christmas. The Festival itself opens on Friday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m. and runs through Thanksgiving weekend till 4 p.m.on Sunday, December 1. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $1 for children. Kids can also enjoy breakfast with Santa each morning of the Festival from 8 to 10 a.m.

Another Festival to visit is the annual Saratoga Festival of Trees held at Saratoga Springs City Center from December 5 through December 8. It also opens with a "By Reservation" Preview Reception on December 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. The $35 donation benefits Catholic Charities which sponsors the event. General Festival hours vary, so check their website for specifics. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, $3 for children over 10, under 10 are free. Also, Festival hours on Thursday, December 5 coincide with the Victorian Street Walk held in downtown Saratoga Springs.

Holiday Shopping Showcase

The Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC) located at 7 Lapham Place in Glens Falls will host its annual Holiday Shopping Showcase beginning on November 23. The showcase features paintings, photographs, specialty foods, hand-painted items, jewelry, and crafts made by nearly fifty Adirondack artists and artisans. All items on display are available to purchase. It is a great place to shop for that unique Adirondack holiday gift. Their hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. The showcase is open through December 23, and will reopen for January 3 and 4. Same hours!
