C is for Christmas Trees

My wife and I first bought our property here in the southeastern Adirondacks in 1987. Since we were both teachers in New Jersey until our retirement in 1998, we had Christmas vacation off and always came up to our Adirondack home for the holiday week and skiing. And ever since our first Christmas here is 1987 we have cut our own Christmas tree.

Cutting your own tree is great fun, exercise, and a chance to enjoy the fresh air. There are many places to cut your own tree in the Adirondacks. We get our tree just down the road from where we live in Fort Ann, New York at the "Stiles Family Christmas Tree Farm." Pam and Dan Stiles have three large lots of trees with stands of pine, fir, spruce and balsam, and many other varieties. You can also get wreaths, kissing balls, garland and other decorative evergreen items. And if you don't feel like trekking into the woods to cut your own, they have freshly cut trees also.

Their son Sammy also helps out at the stand and in the Country Shop, which has a great assortment of handmade gift items such as afghans, pillows, aprons, candles, and pine-cone ornaments. Several years ago I bought my wife a handmade pillow stuffed with balsam boughs there and the scent is still as wonderful and fresh today as when I first purchased it. If you live in the southeastern part of the Adirondacks and would like to cut your tree at the Stiles' Farm, you can call for directions at 518-639-5394.

There's nothing like cutting your own tree for Christmas and shopping for country holiday crafts at a tree farm to get you in the holiday spirit. The kids will love walking though the many rows of trees to help you make the right choice.

If you are not sure where the closest tree farm is, you may want to check out the New York Christmas Tree Farms website for the many choices that exist.

Remember, if you cut your own tree, you know it is fresh and will last much longer! So put on some warm cloths, hats and mittens, toss the tree saw in the car (if you don't have one, many tree farms in the area will supply you with one), and head out for some family fun, exercise, and fresh air at a Christmas Tree Farm near you.

Happy Holidays!!
