Preparing For "Back To School" - Make It Easy!

There are about four weeks left until the big day arrives. Some look forward to it with anticipation; seeing old friends, sports and other extra curricular activities. There are also those that dread the thought of starting school for another year; homework, hassles with teachers and classmates, and a lot of confusion! I know many children that fall into the later category, it is a common reaction from kids with ADHD - including my own. The fear of failure and feelings of inadequacy can literally overwhelm these children, some to the point of panic and anxiety! We still have about one month left, however, and there is no time like the present to begin preparing for the year to come.

Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings... can be a tremendous source of knowledge and inspiration for children of all ages. Watch for that gleam in grandpa's eye the next time he talks about his childhood on the farm, or the pride on grandma's face as she reminisces of the days she and her girl friends took tools in hand to aid in keeping their country running while the men were away fighting on the battle lines. These memories are priceless and children love hearing of them, what a great way to learn a bit of history!

There are countless ways to engage a child in learning; with some imagination and effort, you will be the one hearing them ask for more.

What type of hobbies does your child have, what does he/she like to talk about? This is an excellent way to start a project that will help ready him for the year ahead. Does he like dinosaurs? Perfect! You have an opening to get in some history, geology, geography, math and language arts. Perhaps even some anthropology and archaeology too. Kids love to know the who, what, where, when and why's of subjects they are interested in, leaving a door wide open for a new learning experience.

Journals are another great tool for learning. Are you taking a trip this month? Even a short one can be a fantastic opportunity for learning. Have or help your child/ren plot your destination on a map, log miles, keep track of the names of cities you pass. What was the difference in the architecture of one town from the next? What special feelings and thoughts did they have along the way? All of these things written in a journal can lead to the writing of a fabulous story over the next few days following your trip!
