The last few years have been very turbulent times for my children and I. Not only have we
had to face the challenges of my sons ADHD, but also a chronic illness that I myself suffer
from. In my quest for healing I was fortunate enough to meet up with a group that has had
a profound affect on our lives. Through this group, I learned that a healthy life is no
farther away than your own two hands. It is in those hands where responsibility lies and
changes take place. Not only did I find alternative methods for dealing with my own
dis-ease, but for my sons disability as well.
The group is an Internet based book-reading and discussion forum whose foundation is
sternly built on the concepts of self healing and awareness. Our own Suite101 provides a
wealth of information on alternative medicine. The Health : Wellness Forum
http://www.suite101.com/category.cfm/wel... lists numerous sites that provide
information on an array of subjects from Energy Healing to Vegetarian Living. They are
but a few of the processes that can be easily learned, and once you have become
acquainted with these concepts of healing, you can apply them to your own family life to
find peace and strength through them.
Medication and treatment for children with ADHD can become a real concern for parents,
and the children themselves. The mother of a boy with ADHD expresses her concerns for
her son since he was a small child:
"My son is in a long term treatment facility. He went in when he was 16 and has been
involved in this program and sober for 2 yrs. He was diagnosed in 4th grade with ADHD
and a psychotherapist told us that he was at high risk to be a drug abuser. He began using
at the age of 12 or so. We didn't know about his use until he was about 14 as it
progressed and worsened. He has always struggled in school and as a result had a poor
self esteem which I believe was one of the many reasons he turned to drugs to ease the
pain. He is currently on Adderall and says he can not concentrate in school without it . I
have done enough research to know that Adderall is a form of amphetamine. I am
concerned about him being on this medication. Are there any alternatives (diet perhaps)
that we could find for him. We have been through so much with his addiction problem
and I am fearful of him depending on this medication. I would appreciate suggestions."
