cope with our roles as ADD Moms. We are all individuals, so what works well for me, may or may not work well for you. Persevere to find out what works best for you and your family. Some ideas: 1. Ask your husband or significant other for help with specific tasks. Asking specifically will help both of you know what to expect. Asking for general help may just lead to frustration. 2. Ask your children for specific help, and then be prepared with a task list or some other means of follow through - this is important for all children, but especially for those with ADD. 3. Take medication. Medication for ADD is very effective in helping some of us handle everyday life. It's certainly worth a try because there is a significant chance it can help you focus better. 4. Say no. As much as you want to do a good deed and as worthy as a cause is, you can't do everything. We as ADDers sometimes get involved in too many projects. Realize that you must limit yourself. If you add something, realize something else has to go. 5. Use lists, calendars, computers, husbands, children, friends, voice mail and more to help you remember important things. I have at times used one or all of these very effectively! 6. Get someone to help you set up a simple system of organization for everyday things - bill paying, checklists, etc. It may not work perfectly all the time, but if it is in place, you have a better chance of using it. 7. Use a coach. This can be a paid ADD Coach or you can get a friend or spouse to help you either on a daily or weekly basis, or for specific projects to help keep you on track. 8. Find a support group. Sometimes talking with others in the same boat as you and finding out how they cope with some of the same issues will help you to deal with your own issues. 9. Realize you're not a bad mother. Everyone gets frustrated sometimes, everyone loses patience sometimes. If you are really having a hard time with being an ADD Mom, then get help from a behavior therapist or other professional. But do realize that ADD Moms can be excellent mothers even if we're a little impatient sometimes. ADD Moms can, to an extent, "have it all." We just have to try a little harder and plan a
