Hey kids, now that the winners of the K.K.C. have been announced, let's have a look at the next exciting step on the way to creating the cover for the Fun, Fun and More Fun @ Suite101 eBook.
It all started when the judges decided that Jordan's title "Fun, Fun and More Fun" would make a great title if we did a combo and turned it into a slogan by adding @ Suite101.
This is what Jordan said....
"Hi,
My name is Jordan.
I'm six years old and in grade one. I think a great title for the book is 'Fun, Fun and More Fun.' This book is going to be lots of fun.
Jordan"
"Yes Jordan it will be fun indeed!"
In keeping with this idea of making a "combo," we chose Teneal's work as the overall winner. "Congratulations, Teneal."
"Hi, My name is Teneal I love art.
I use to do art classes and I made amazing paintings. Also models of animals, pots and molds with clay. Drawing is my special gift and contrasting colours of collage.
I can do any effect from a Japanese style to a caveman style. Thanks, Teneal"
The judges decided we would add lil' pics all around her image so that more kids could win and more ideas would be welcomed onto the cover.
Clever?
Yes - the idea was clever. Don't be tricked if you think you are not that smart! The combination, or collage as it is called, is an easily-learned process that you might like to learn with me.
I reduced Teneal's coloured drawing to black and white using simple graphics software.
The composition was scanned so that the original could be put aside and not damaged.
It is wise to keep your original safe at all times.
Using a copy also means that there will be no graphite to become smudged across the picture.
Now, colour was added.
It was again scanned.
A background longer than then picture was added.
It had a different texture than the background of the collage so that it could act as a final background onto which words could be placed.
Adding a background in this way changed the shape of the picture plane from landscape to portrait. This was the shape we needed for the final book cover.
And, this rough draft (called a proof) was then sent off to the Senior Managing Editor of Kids Korner (Barbara Bell) for approval.
The original has been saved in two ways:
.jpg format
and in a software alterable format.
This is so that if Barbara says she would like some changes made, this will be possible.
