A blackened room with a spotlight on sock puppets can be a very powerful and dramatic scenario and the photos you will take will be memories forever more! You can also have a lot of artistic fun making cue cards and visual props. If you think this sounds like a lot of work - think again. If you have a holiday period over which you need to keep the kids entertained wouldn't it be nice to break the tasks up into structured exercises? Have it time planned. This will teach the kids time managment. It will assist with the notions of goal setting. Perhaps you could have some little prizes etc. to keep them motivated with out allowing the project to become competitive. Competitiveness about the project might end up spoiling the holidays all together. Draw up a schedule - one of the planning days could be making the words and drawing scenes from the play. Another day back drops could be created. Sound like to much organising? Hand this over to the kids judicially too! It is a really good idea no matter how big or small the idea to have a director. It is great for kids to see that in the final analysis there always has to be a core decision maker in any enterprise. Keep an eye on the chosen child though and make sure that he or she is supported. Or do not allow the role to become one that causes stress by rotating the position. You can predict that arguments will occur - however - teach to the minute and use incidences of disagreement to teach the kids about democracy! Preserve memories of the event by taking photos and making a video. Keep the excitement and the creativity fresh by journaling throughout the experience and then writing up the activity afterwards. The internet is a great place to journal and catalogue memories so get used to enetering your activity along side the activities that other kids exhibit from all over the world. You can make use of wonderful interactive tools that are available on the internet and assist the children to establish Pen Pals. By having a project to write about the kids have immediate context of a meaningful dialogue. This helps them learn how to make friends and share their interests with others.
