Is This A Spectacular Or a Comfortable Bonding Exercise?


Here are some suggestions.
  1. The pergola: open air, lots of ways backdrops can be hung, plenty of space for props.
  2. The rumpus room: Lots of space and perhaps the kids can make as much noise as they like and as much mess too.
  3. The local hall: maybe the local community would be happy to see it used by a family when nothing else is on. This kind of venue is already set up with stage, curtains and maybe there would even be props housed back stage.
  4. School grounds: ask the principal; maybe he/she would be quite happy to see a family making good use of the playgrounds.
  5. Do you have a tennis court? The fencing makes a great place to hang backdrops and there is lots of space and a very good surface.
  6. The lounge room: now you may be saying that the lounge room is too small -but think small if this is all you have. A table and sock puppets can be just as much fun and the intimacy of the space can make it very effective. You might even have lounge lights set up that can be focused on a table that can be covered. Sound will be well taken care of too.
The type of puppets you use, the size of the backdrops, (or whether you have them) lighting, costuming and sound will all depend on the choice of story and where your 'space' will be. So attempt to have a good idea of what and where before you decide for sure about other elements of the project.
Puppet Types.
You can buy your puppets or make them. You can integrate them into scenes that are mainly human in form or you can turn the whole event into a puppet show. The choice will be influenced by the factors we have already spoken of. You can make puppets using paper mache, socks, or cardboard cutouts on sticks and strings. If you would like to know how to make puppets do a course in the holidays, or do a simple web search or search the local library and you will come up with a myriad of ideas.
