This little activity is just for fun.

It is something you can do to help cheer others. When I am working as an Arts Worker I travel around to lots and lots of communities. Sometimes I go and visit children in hospital and other times I visit older people in another kind of hospital too! When I go to schools and other community groups where people are really having fun - I like to suggest that the activities we do might be useful in helping the ones who are a lil' less fortunate. So this Christmas I came up with this idea. Wherever I go we make Christmas Links. In a very traditional way we are forming a very, very long chain. Just before Christmas I will take it up to the children's hospital so that the little children there can have some fun too! This will give them something bright and cheerful to look at whilst they lie in bed getting strong and well. Maybe you would like to do the same for sick children in your area? It is very easy, fun to do and won't cost you much at all. Maybe all the kids on your block can make one over a period of time? That would be fun!
Here Is How

Materials....
  • A4 Photocopy paper or paper the size of a normal writing page (8 1/2"x 11"). It doesn't really matter what kind of paper you use but the thicker the better.
  • Colouring Implements! That leaves it broad doesn't it? Anything bright and cheerful will do. We used felts, crayons, oil pastels and colouring pencils. But whatever you have at hand will be great!
  • A stapler
That is all you need and with such humble fare you will be able to bring lots and lots of cheer to the people around you!
What To Do
  • Make a strip of paper. It doesn't really matter about size so long as the strip is a lot longer that it is high. You can tear rather than cut if you are after textural effects.
  • Draw Christmas pictures along the strip of paper and colour very, very brightly.

Some of the kids found that 'story chains' worked well. For example a picture of Santa driving a sleigh pulled by reindeers stretched out will fill the strip neatly.

Other kids really liked to create long patterns or Christmas decorations.
  • Once you and your friends have made lots and lots of links join them together by stapling the links through each other.
Viola! That is all there is to it. No fuss, no mess, no bother.
