Assistive Technology: What the Heck Is It?

  • This technology is increasing in popularity as price decreases and recognition rates improve.
  • However, in order for voice recognition to work effectively, software being used (i.e. Office, web browser, email program) must have full keyboard support. Voice recognition can be cumbersome when using the Web. It requires intensive training and practice, as well as requiring high-speed systems with substantive memory (RAM).

    5. Scanning Software

    • Used by individuals with some kinds of physical or cognitive disabilities.
    • Software highlights selection choices (i.e. letters, to menu items, links, phrases) one at a time. User selects desired item by hitting a switch when the desired item is highlighted or announced.
    • The strength of such software is it can be used with minimum mobility and with a variety of switches - even with an eyelid switch!
    • The downside is it can be extremely time consuming and is intended for limited functions like data entry.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions how web design may impact the effectiveness of these assistive technologies.

    Cheers,
