his daughter. The teen crowd will no doubt flock to Uptown Girls, starring Brittany Murphy, Dakota Fanning, and Heather Locklear. Cuba Gooding, Jr. is desperately looking for a hit, and may have it with The Fighting Temptations, a character driven comedy more in the vein of his Oscar winning success in Jerry Maguire. Terrence Stamp will star in the comedy The Boss' Daughter, about a young man doing everything wrong when housesitting the boss's house.

Of course, the film most likely to be talked about in August will be Gigli, the first on-screen pairing for real life couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. This was supposedly the film where they met and fell in love, and it will be interesting to see the chemistry develop on screen. Martin Brest directs the film about a hitman and a lesbian contract killer ... all great talent, let's see how it turns out.

August is also a great time for independent films, if only they can make their way to more theaters. Campbell Scott, Hope Davis, and Denis Leary headline the Alan Rudolph directed film The Secret Lives of Dentists, which is actually a serious drama about marriage, and the tribulations that threaten to tear marriages apart. That one could be an independent success at the Oscars. Jim Caviezel plays the husband of a murdered woman now on the trail of the serial killer who killed her in Highwaymen. The second film to come out of the whole Project Greenlight screenwriting/directing competition started by Chris Moore, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon will arrive in theaters in August ... The Battle of Shaker Heights is the story of a high school kid who likes to re-enact World War II battles. By the way, the second Project Greenlight documentary following the contest and the making of the film begins on HBO on June 22. In other films, Stephen Frears will direct a film noir thriller with Dirty Pretty Things, and controversial director Larry Clark will again bring us a controversial drama about troubled teens with Ken Park, which is, believe it or not, already gaining more controversy than his previous Kids and Bully.

S.W.A.T. comes to the big screen in August, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Colin Farrell, and LL Cool J in this tale of cops. Jamie Lee Curtis will star in Disney's second remake of Freaky Friday, and Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts will headline the Merchant Ivory
