The 2003 Summer Movie Preview

Apr 25, 2003 - © Jason O'Brien

Another big sequel coming in May will be X2: X-Men United, with the returning cast of regulars, including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart. Those two films will be the untouchable blockbusters ringing up the big money in May, but there are some other films which deserve a piece of the pie.

Disney's only animated offering this year will be their next collaboration with Pixar, and this one looks just as promising as their previous classics. Finding Nemo should be another hit with parents and children, as the beautiful computer animation tells the story this time of a wayward fish. It's Pixar's first ever summer release, and I can see this will be a big hit. It features some wonderful voice talent, from Albert Brooks to Ellen DeGeneres to Willem Dafoe to Geoffrey Rush. I'm also sure this will be end up being one of the major contenders for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, and could very well finally be the one that brings the new Oscar to the Disney studio.

Tougher to gauge its success is how Jim Carrey will do when he returns to his comedy roots in Bruce Almighty, a high concept comedy where he plays a man endowed with the abilities of God himself (played by Morgan Freeman). Jennifer Aniston co-stars. The previews look promising, with some funny moments. While we're talking comedy, Albert Brooks plays the future son-in-law of Michael Douglas in The In-Laws, which should do okay, but I wouldn't expect too much. Eddie Murphy may finally have a hit on his hands with Daddy Day Care, where he co-stars with Steve Zahn as men who think it would be great to open a daycare staffed by Daddies only to find how tough it can be. The previews already had me laughing, and maybe Eddie Murphy can finally break this terrible box office bombing streak he's had lately.

One of the films I'm most excited about in May is the experimental romantic comedy, Down With Love, starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. It's experimental because they are attempting to make a film that looks like it was made in the 60's, down to the painted backdrops for sets and overall story. This one could be a tough sell, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out in a souped up summer of big budget event pictures.

Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, and Charlize Theron will
