My Predictions For The 75th Annual Academy Awards

Mar 19, 2003 - © Jason O'Brien

wouldn't really count on it to overtake the fast paced editing of Chicago.

  • WILL WIN: Chicago
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: Chicago
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Minority Report

    BEST MAKEUP

I have no clue what happened with the Makeup nominating committee this year, but they really screwed the pooch on this one. I mean, no Chicago? No Lord of the Rings: Two Towers? No The Hours and Nicole Kidman's fake nose? We only get Frida and The Time Machine. It's almost embarrassing to know that The Time Machine is now an Oscar nominated film, and even worse, could be known as an Oscar winning film if it wins this toss-up. It's got to be Frida, if only because it's up for six total Oscars, and should win an Oscar somewhere. This is where it has its best chances. I mean, can you see them honoring the makeup that made Jeremy Irons look a rejected member of Blue Man Group?

  • WILL WIN: Frida
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: Frida
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: The Hours, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Chicago

    BEST MUSIC - ORIGINAL SCORE

My personal choice would be Thomas Newman, and another moody, epic score to the gangster family drama "Road to Perdition", but he really does not have a shot here. Elmer Bernstein was able to evoke the classic 1950's film scores his own score to "Far From Heaven", but the competition is too much against him. John Williams, the most nominated person alive, actually has a shot for his jazzy score to "Catch Me If You Can", but I think this one will be going to Philip Glass for his moody and somber score to "The Hours."

  • WILL WIN: Philip Glass for "The Hours"
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: Thomas Newman for "Road to Perdition"
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Danny Elfman for "Spider-Man", Peter Gabriel for "Rabbit-Proof Fence"

    BEST MUSIC - ORIGINAL SONG

If all of the performers show up to perform their nominated songs on Oscar Night, it will be another unique and powerful group of performers. Who would have ever thought that a song by rapper Eminem would be nominated for an Oscar? But it is ... the great song "Lose Yourself" would be my personal choice to win the Oscar, but I think the nomination may be as far as the Academy wants to go in honoring Eminem for breaking through so ably in his debut film, 8 Mile. "I Move On"
