My Predictions For The 75th Annual Academy Awards

Mar 19, 2003 - © Jason O'Brien

his best. Hall was truly one of our most gifted cinematographers, who makes images so beautiful on film that they could be paintings. He had an amazing gift, and he should posthumously win his last Oscar on March 23.

  • WILL WIN: Road to Perdition
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: Road to Perdition
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Auto-Focus

BEST ART DIRECTION / SET DECORATION

These were all films that had wonderful achievements in their set designs, four of whom all made their period detail come amazingly to life, and a fifth which again presented a fantasy world with exquisite and magnificent detail. The second Lord of the Rings film is really the odd man out this year, and it will not win this Oscar. Count Frida and Road to Perdition out ... again, both wonderful achievements, but this one comes down to Chicago and Gangs of New York. I only see Chicago winning in a sweep, but otherwise, this one will most likely go to Gangs of New York, which was universally praised for its art direction, as its sets brilliantly reconstructed 1870's New York and the Five Points, a reminder of the hard work that can still be used to construct sets in the era of computer generated sets.

  • WILL WIN: Gangs of New York
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: Gangs of New York
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Minority Report

    BEST COSTUME DESIGN

You know that Chicago sweep I was talking about? Count on it here ... Chicago's costumes are perfect reconstructions of the 1920's swinging style, and the sweep of the awards should pretty much claim this one. Frida has an outside chance, but you can pretty much count out the others, particularly Gangs of New York and The Pianist, not really as well known for their costume achievements.

  • WILL WIN: Chicago
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: Chicago
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Catch Me If You Can, Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones

    BEST FILM EDITING

A very rare occurrence indeed ... all five films up for Editing are also the five Best Picture nominees. Even though this Oscar has gone in the more recent years to a highly technical achievement like a Lord of the Rings, overall Oscar history usually suggests that the Best Picture and Best Film Editing winner usually match, so I would expect another swept in Oscar here for Chicago. The Hours does have a shot, for its seamless editing between three time periods, but I wouldn't
