as she won a number of the pre-honors, but the competition may just be too fierce. Meryl Streep made Oscar history with this nomination, breaking the tie with Katharine Hepburn to become the most nominated actor ever in Oscar history, with 13 nominations. Streep has a shot to win, but I'm not seeing it happen. This one really comes down to Catherine Zeta-Jones and Julianne Moore. A few weeks ago, I would have went with Zeta-Jones all the way, as she is the one most universally praised in "Chicago", and she is truly incredible, bringing such an incredible passion and excitement to the role that we haven't really ever seen from her. But I have this sense that Oscar voters will want to honor double nominee Julianne Moore, and since they're more likely to go with Nicole Kidman in the leading category, they'll mark down Moore in the Supporting category. "The Hours" was universally praised for its acting, and I think Julianne Moore might be our dark horse surprise here. I could see it going either way, and Zeta-Jones could very well end up being the winner (she would be my personal choice) ... but look for Julianne Moore to win here in an upset. BEST DIRECTOR Well, the Directors Guild sure threw us a wrench when they selected Rob Marshall for Best Director. All along, it looked like Martin Scorsese was on the fast track to FINALLY win a Best Director Academy Award (and he truly does deserve it this year, as well as for his body of work). But then all of a sudden, a Scorsese backlash began, with William Goldman's hateful article where he complained that people in Hollywood are tired of thinking that they feel obligated to vote for Scorsese because he's never won before, and then the DGA went and honored Marshall. Only five times in the DGA's 55 year history has the Best Director Oscar winner not also won the DGA award, and I still think this year will mark that sixth time they disagree. I still believe the Academy will finally honor Scorsese with this Oscar, not only because he's never won before, but also because this was a dream project that he waited 25 years to finally make, and also, what a great moment it will be during
