My Predictions For The 75th Annual Academy Awards

surprise us this year! Ed Harris gave another solid, touching performance as the poet dying of AIDS in "The Hours", but his screen time was relatively short, and he didn't quite stand out like these other performances did. Paul Newman is a legend of course, and this is his first time ever nominated in the Supporting category. He gave another powerful performance in "Road to Perdition", but unless the Academy is really in a sympathetic mood, I don't think we'll see him winning again this year. John C. Reilly was everywhere on screen in 2002, appearing in three of the films nominated for Best Picture this year. His performance in "Chicago" was indeed another wonderful performance, and it's good to finally see this incredibly gifted and versatile actor honored with his first ever Oscar nomination. If there is an upset in this category, it will come from Christopher Walken, who last won this Oscar way back in 1978. • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Willem Dafoe in "Auto-Focus"

This always seems to be the category where all of us who predict the Oscar winners end up being surprised, and I think a surprise could be in store once again in this category. Queen Latifah's nomination was definitely the biggest surprise here, for her endearing performance as the prison warden in charge of the female convicts in "Chicago". Unless we end up being REALLY surprised on Oscar Night, I don't think Latifah will be taking the Oscar. Kathy Bates gave yet another impressive performance of such a quirky character in "About Schmidt", and was even brave enough to do a nude scene in that unforgettable sequence when she seduces Jack Nicholson in the hot tub. There's an off-chance she could win, as
