My Predictions For The 75th Annual Academy Awards

Mar 19, 2003 - © Jason O'Brien

On" has a shot, if only because it's the chance to honor the wonderful musical with a music Oscar. Songs from animated movies always do well, but Paul Simon's "Father and Daughter" doesn't really have a chance, Disney films tend to do better at winning Oscars. And honestly, has anybody even heard "Burn It Blue" from Frida? This one is pretty much easy ... U2's song to Gangs of New York will be taking the Oscar. It won the Golden Globe, and has most of the momentum.

  • WILL WIN: "The Hands That Built America"
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: "Lose Yourself"
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: "Hero" from Spider-Man

    BEST SOUND

Best Sound is always a tough one to call, mostly because it doesn't seem the Academy really knows sometimes what it's voting for here. • WILL WIN: Chicago
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Minority Report, Signs

    BEST SOUND EDITING

  • WILL WIN: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones

    BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

This one will also most likely be another easy choice for the Academy to put a couple of Oscars towards the second installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. All three of these visual effects nominees exhibited the latest, greatest advances available in computer visual effects, but Two Towers is even more well known this year for its ability to truly create a computer generated character who we actually forget is computer generated. The creation of the unique character Gollum will no doubt stand out to Academy voters, and it will follow in the original's tracks and take another Oscar for its glorious visual effects.

  • WILL WIN: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
  • MY PERSONAL CHOICE: The Lord of
