Less Than 2 Weeks To Go ... How Unpredictable Can We Get?

Best Actor ended up going to Daniel Day-Lewis, much deserved, but I don't really know how much that helps determine who will win the Oscar. Nicholson is still an Academy favorite, and I still think an upset by Adrien Brody is possible, but Day-Lewis is certainly helped by the SAG win. Best Supporting Actor was the other big surprise of the night, as Christopher Walken snuck in to win over the heavy Oscar favorite, Chris Cooper, and I really think this one has turned. I think Walken may indeed be taking home another Oscar. But again, it's a tough call ... I had said before that if anyone had the ability to steal the thunder from Cooper, it would be Walken.

The Best Supporting Actress prize went to Catherine Zeta-Jones for Chicago, and this certainly boosts her chances at the Oscar ... but again, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep could still make a race of it.

It was absolutely no surprise to anyone that the ensemble cast of Chicago took the big SAG prize for Best Cast of a Motion Picture, and Richard Gere actually gave a very good speech about their love for this film project and their sheer delight in making it. So it's clear that it will win Best Picture, and certainly will have a strong pull to sweep in Rob Marshall for Best Director as well.

It was nice to see Clint Eastwood again receiving another lifetime achievement award, and his was probably one of the best speeches of the night, next to Gere's.

In other news, film critics Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper did their annual show where they announced their own personal choices if they voted for the Oscars, and here were those ...

  • Ebert-Julianne Moore
  • Roeper-Diane Lane

    Supp Actress

  • Ebert-Kathy Bates
  • Roeper-Catherine Zeta-Jones

    Supp Actor

  • Ebert-Chris Cooper

    How Oscar Blew It

  • Roeper-Ed Harris nomination for "underwritten plot device"
  • Ebert-No City of God. He said 60 people walked out on it at an Academy screening.

So we have less than two weeks to go now until the big night. The precursors are pretty much done, it's time to clear the way for the big 75th Anniversary Academy Awards! The Nominees Luncheon was held today in Beverly Hills, the annual gathering where the Academy invites all the year's Oscar Nominees to a luncheon, and I'll have a personal
