So where does that leave us here in mid December, still early on in the film awards season? As I mentioned at the start, pretty much all over the map. Certainly, we have some sure things, and certainly we have some frontrunners, but we don't yet have a truly overwhelming favorite, although About Schmidt and Far From Heaven are the closest things we have so far. Count on those two, as well as Julianne Moore and Jack Nicholson from those films as front-runners for the top acting awards. You also have to mention Daniel Day-Lewis in that group, he certainly has the momentum for another Best Actor nomination, the Academy sure loves him. Adaptation is looking like the odds on favorite to win for screenplay, Far From Heaven is the favorite for cinematography, but look at Best Director, all over the map on that one. Todd Haynes, Roman Polanski, Pedro Almodovar ... it's all about as different as the Best Picture choices. But things will start getting clearer, maybe, this Thursday, when the Golden Globe nominations will be announced live early in the morning (and will most likely be broadcast on E! and NBC's Today show perhaps since NBC will be doing the coverage of the 60th Annual Globes ceremony in January). It's our last major precursor for the month, and the nominees should help point to who and what really have the best chances for Oscar nominations in February. My final article of the year will recap the Golden Globe nominees and see where we are as we get ready to close the first month of the film awards season! And watch out at the boxoffice this week ... the crowds will be out in droves starting Wednesday for the next installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers. There's no doubt that it will make millions upon millions, but its prospects at repeating its successor's Oscar success are looking slimmer each day, especially as it goes unnoticed by the critics organizations. We'll see how it ends up doing in the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday.
