And more news ... AFI, SAG, Globes, and the Oscars ...I can certainly tell it's the end of November ... and not just because I'm about to consume way too much food for Thanksgiving! The year end awards news is starting to come out more and more, and there's a lot to pass along this week. Also this week, we have a highly anticipated major film coming out that will kick us off in a big way as we enter that hallowed month for some of the most anticipated films to come, December. Steven Soderbergh's foray into a psychological science fiction drama, Solaris, starring George Clooney and the stunningly and hauntingly beautiful Natasha McElphone, opens this Wednesday, and the buzz is sounding really good on this one. There's an interesting little news item of note on this film, which I'll discuss a little later on. So before I pass along the official schedule of events for all the film awards we'll be encountering for the next four months, time to pore through the latest news we have. First up, the American Film Institute announced what their next "100 Film List" special will be for next year. This has become a new tradition, ever since the AFI compiled their list of the 100 greatest films of all time. Since then, we've had lists of the 100 best romantic films, the 100 best comedy films, and most recently this year, the 100 most thrilling films. The AFI has announced that the next one will be called "100 Heroes and Villains", which is looking like a very fun concept. This one will not name specific films, but actually the 100 greatest heroes and villains from film history. The people voting on these will be a jury of 1500 directors, actors, screenwriters, critics, historians, and others, and they will be selecting 50 heroes and 50 villains. As usual, the AFI initially presents a list of 400 possible candidates for which the jury will select from. Some of their "nominees" include teams like Bonnie and Clyde and Thelma & Louise, and range from individuals like the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard Of Oz, Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Gandhi, Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies, Jane Hudson in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Superman, Luke Skywalker, Rocky Balboa, Friday the 13th's Jason, Freddy Krueger, Scarlett O'Hara, John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn, James Bond, and even a group entry of the birds from Hitchcock's classic The Birds.
