My Ideas and Predictions for the 75th Anniversary Celebration!December approaches, and that means that things start getting wild and crazy, with one precursor award after the other, in what will likely be our last extra long film awards season, going from December to the end of March. With news that the Academy will likely move everything up a month starting next year, it will mean a much shorter timeframe to still fill in a lot of awards and year end film discussion. But it's upon us, and the good old National Board of Review will be first out of the gate in just a couple of weeks. That's the most exciting time of the year for us who love film and the awards that honor them. Here at Suite 101, as usual, I will provide you all the results and news all film awards season long, usually at the rate of one article per week. You'll be informed of all the winners in every major precursor awards given, and even some of the smaller city film circle and film critics choices. I'll be with you to analyze the strange trends that frontrunners and sleepers take throughout the four months of the awards season, culminating in that magical night in late March ... the 75th Annual Academy Awards. This time however we have the added thrill of this Oscars being the Academy's 75th. So there will be many discussions about what the Academy will do for its big 75th, and I truly expect a mega show. Producer Gil Cates says the telecast will move briskly, but I say folks ... expect to be up late for this one. So to kick things off before we get into the wild and woolly film awards season, and in case I don't get a chance to comment much on this when we're wading through film awards, I want to present this week my predictions and my ideas for how I think, hope, and predict the 75th Annual show will be presented. First, again kudos to the Academy for bringing back Mr. Gil Cates. He's incredibly experienced at producing the biggest awards show around, 10 times previous, and he's the perfect one to helm this biggest show of shows. The next biggest issue to discuss is who will host. (SPECIAL NOTE: I actually wrote this article two weeks ago, and just two days after I wrote the article, in a surprisingly quick and early announcement, it was announced that Steve Martin would be the host for the 75th Annual Oscars. Martin returns after hosting the Oscars once before, hosting it just two years ago. Martin is certainly not a bad choice, I thought he did a very classy job before, but I was really thinking that this would be a great opportunity for Billy Crystal to return. Martin started with the comedy early by saying in response to taking on the job of hosting again, "I'm very pleased to be hosting the Oscars again, because fear and nausea always make me lose weight." So Martin is our official host, but I'll go ahead and share with you my original thoughts on who should host as I wrote them two weeks ago.)
