Summer Movie PreviewHollywood has made it official now ... summer starts with May. It used to be that Memorial Day weekend always marked the arrival of the big blockbuster summer movies, but for the past few years, Hollywood has inched further and further into the weeks before Memorial Day to get a jumpstart on the summer season. And this year, they made it all the way to the very beginning of May, and it's opened huge. Spider-Man debuted in theaters last weekend, and set a brand new record, beyond almost anyone's expectations. It grossed an astonishing $114 million in just three days on its opening weekend, shattering the previous record held for only about a year by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It was obviously a film that people of all ages had been waiting for, and it also helped that critical reviews were actually quite glowing for the film. I waited till during the week to go see the film, and I have to admit also ... of the genre of superhero films, this Spider-Man film ranks as one of the best. Tobey Maguire surprised all, including me, and did an exceptional job as the hero, and I liked how this film had a very good balance of drama and action, allowing the creation of Spider-Man to unfold slowly and more realistically than some other superhero films. So the summer season is on! And as I usually do, it's time again to present my two part preview of the summer movie season, looking at all the major films to be released from May to August, and preview what films will do well, and what films may end up making it through the boxoffice dollars to actually garner some Oscar recognition early next year. So this week, I'll begin with Part 1 of the summer movie preview, looking at May and June. Box office totals this year are already surpassing last year's total at this time, and this summer looks to be one of the biggest ever, and it's already off to a huge start. So let's dig in! So let's begin with May! We already talked about Spider-Man, Sam Raimi's very successful big screen incarnation of the comic book legend. It will undoubtedly be one of the most successful films at the boxoffice for the year's totals, and could even get some technical nods for Oscars, especially for Sound, Visual Effects, and perhaps even Art Direction, just depends how the year goes. Spider-Man gets a few more days of holding the boxoffice hostage before the next huge blockbuster comes along to challenge it for the top dollars of the year, and who knows, maybe even the technical Oscars.
