74th Oscar Countdown: 6 Days

from Vanilla Sky

Randy Newman again nominated for the main song from Monsters, Inc., a delightful animated adventure from Disney and Pixar, but he won't win here. I was surprised to see the Academy nominate the clearly-begging-for-an-Oscar song from Pearl Harbor by Faith Hill, and I doubt it has a chance to win this Oscar. Paul McCartney has an outside chance for his title song to Vanilla Sky, but I think this one is between two songs ... Sting's song from Kate & Leopold and Enya's incredibly powerful song from Lord of the Rings. I wouldn't have given Sting a chance before, until it won Best Song at the Golden Globes. Now he has a serious shot, but be honest, the song wasn't all that great. They may give it to him just because he's Sting, but my hope is that they'll honor Enya, who also has had a notable year, as the events of 9/11 propelled one of her songs to the top of the charts. "May It Be" is a quintessential Enya song, and she should win the Oscar. One thing's for sure ... if the Academy can get Paul McCartney to perform along with all the other original artists who have agreed to sing already, we will have some really good musical performances on this year's Oscars. One of the toughest categories to predict, but I unfortunately think Sting will take this one for "Until."
WILL WIN: "Until" from Kate & Leopold
ACTUALLY DESERVES TO WIN: "May It Be" from Lord of the Rings
DESERVED A NOMINATION, BUT DIDN'T GET IT: "For Always" from A.I. or "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge

And that finally brings us to the big one, and amazingly, another one of the toughest to predict ...

BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR 2001
And the nominees are:
A Beautiful Mind
Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, Producers (Universal and Dreamworks)

Gosford Park
Robert Altman, Bob Balaban, and David Levy, Producers (USA Films)

In The Bedroom
Graham Leader, Ross Katz, and Todd Field, Producers (Miramax)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Peter Jackson, Barrie M. Osborne, and Tim Sanders, Producers (New Line)

Moulin Rouge
Martin Brown, Baz Luhrmann, and Fred Baron, Producers (20th Century Fox)

As the Academy usually does, they have nominated five very different films for their top prize. Gosford Park is the biggest surprise from the list of nominees, as most had not expected this nod. As such, it doesn't have a shot at winning the top
