Well, in six days, the 74th Annual Academy Awards will finally be here! And not a moment too soon. This film awards and Oscar season has been so hard to predict, and not only that, but this year's Oscar season has been downright ugly in many ways. I'm speaking in particular to this ugly, shameless campaign to attack A Beautiful Mind because it doesn't portray John Nash's life exactly as it was.
Let me ask anyone who makes that argument ... what movie of any kind based on a true life person or event has EVER been completely accurate? Ron Howard and the creators of the film have said repeatedly that this film was inspired by Nash's life, and to make a good dramatic film, it was necessary to leave out certain aspects of Nash's life. Why is this such a bad thing? The film should stand on its own, and the quality of the film should be judged by what's in the film itself ... the acting, the directing, the writing, the story. A Beautiful Mind may not be the greatest film ever made, and it certainly was not the best film of the year, but if this ugly and embarrassing campaign causes another lesser film to take the Best Picture prize away from that film, then that is the biggest travesty. Some of the greatest films of all time that deal with real life events have all taken dramatic liberties with their true stories, which is necessary sometimes to make a successful film. Why should A Beautiful Mind be held to any different standard than some of these other films, many of which have won Best Picture Academy Awards already? Anyway, that's just my two cents on that ... well, this is it, we're down to the wire now. Oscar Weekend is coming up in just a couple of days, and in this, Part Six of my seven part series counting down to the big day, I reveal my predictions in the four final categories I have left to tell you my predictions in, including the big one, Best Picture. Today is Tuesday, March 19, and this is the deadline day for all the Academy members to have their ballots in, so as you read this now, the Academy has filled in all their votes, and now it's time to count them! This year's Academy Awards stands to be one of the most interesting around, especially because we have very few sure things in any category, and even the big one, Best Picture, is in doubt for so many reasons. The music categories have been particularly tough to predict this year, another reason I saved them for last! But one of my final categories to predict is an easy one, so I'll start off with it ... Best Visual Effects.
