The Academy will also be giving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for the first time in over five years (the last recipient was Quincy Jones). Director and former Academy President Arthur Hiller is receiving the Hersholt Award this year. Hiller has been involved with several charitable organizations over the years, including the Motion Picture and Television Fund, Amnesty International, Inner City Filmmakers, the Los Angeles Central Library's reading program, the Deaf Arts Council, the Anti-Defamation League, the Streisand Center of UCLA and the Venice Family Clinic. Another special award was also announced, but this one is not given at the Oscar ceremony in March. It's given at the Scientific and Technical Awards dinner on March 2. Edmund M. Di Giulio will be receiving the Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award for his technological contributions to the film industry. Di Giulio is best known for his part in the development and engineering of the Steadicam. That's it for this week ... we're only about a week and a half away from the announcement of the 74th Annual Academy Award nominations. So before that happens, next week I will reveal my individual choices for the best achievements in film for the various categories (my own If I Voted for the Oscars), followed by my list of the ten best films of 2001.
