Golden Globe Nominations and The End of 2001

Globes giving it a Best Drama nomination. It's also doing incredibly well at the boxoffice, which was expected, has ended up on several top ten lists, and is getting very high critical acclaim. It was interesting to see the Hollywood Foreign Press Association also select critical favorite Mulholland Drive, which again I'm happy to see, but I still don't see it happening at the Academy Awards.

Best Actor in a Drama looks like a pretty good list of who may be up for the Oscar, as well as the Best Actress in a Drama category. It's interesting, the Globes seem to have provided a perfect mix of honoring the smaller, independent films (although pretty much ignoring Memento) as well as a couple of the big Hollywood productions. It will be even more interesting to see which the Globes side with on January 20, when the awards will be presented.

So looking at the various buzz now as the year concludes, Monsters Ball is also getting incredible critical acclaim, and even with its dark subject matter, it could be an Oscar dark horse. I can't wait to see that one myself. But mark my words, A Beautiful Mind looks to be the one perfect Oscar film that has everything going for it ... a respected male lead, a respected director who some feel is overdue for Oscar recognition, it's a film being universally praised as one of the best of the year, and it may have some good boxoffice to go with it once it opens wide next week.

We'll learn more as the film awards season progresses, especially as we move towards the various guild awards, which are always a much better predictor of Oscar success, as these nods come from the industry themselves, same as the Academy Awards. The film awards season takes a break during the holidays, but come January 5, we'll be back in full swing with the new AFI Awards, being broadcast on CBS, and also the National Society of Film Critics announcing their choices for the year's best.

Typically at year's end, I'll try another stab at making my early predictions for Academy Award nominations. Instead, I want to end with a personal note on this most tragic year as it now comes to a close. Hard to imagine, that always futuristic sounding year, 2001, has come and gone already. Back in 1968, Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick
