WAKING LIFE
And of course, the early buzz says that Shrek should take this one very easily, but it might be interesting to see what happens. If Waking Life gets nominated, the Academy may see this as a way to honor a very invigorating and fresh independent film (from Richard Linklater) that used animation in a very intriguing way. Monsters, Inc. is cute and enjoyable, but I don't think it has the power to take this Oscar away from either Waking Life or Shrek. Either way, it's good to see an Oscar now for Animated Feature Films, and any one of these choices will be a good inaugural choice for this new award.
We're now only about two exact months away from the announcement of the 74th Annual Academy Award nominations, when we'll know the choices for Animated Feature, and all the other Oscar categories as well. The Film Awards season precursors are continuing, and in my next article, I'll recap the two major critics organizations choices, the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics. That's followed by the announcement of the Golden Globe nominations, the last major film awards season event of the year before the holidays.
