A New 2001 Oscar Contender

Hard to believe it's November already. The 2001 films continue to be released, with Disney and Pixar's new animated offering, Monsters, Inc. opening this weekend. K-Pax opened to relatively strong praise from critics and audiences, and buzz is already beginning for yet another Oscar nomination for Kevin Spacey for his performance in that film. Richard Linklater's Waking Life is being even more highly praised, being called one of the best films of the year. It's slowly opening around the country, and it looks like one not to be missed.

And we're only one month away from the big month of December, and all the promising films to come in that month. So things will begin getting more crazy soon, as the film awards season is only one short month away. The National Board of Review is usually the first one out of the gate in early December, and we'll begin to see what films and performances start to be cemented in Academy voters' minds with those awards.

So there's not much else new to report this week, and I will most likely stay on an every other week schedule through November until the awards season starts strong, when I'll be here once again every Friday with a new article discussing the film awards season. Because of the lack of recent news about the Oscars or film in general, I have temporarily moved to an every other week schedule for this column, but it's only temporary! I of course will continue to provide continual coverage of all the various film awards in this column as I have done in the past, and will continue with my predictions as usual. And once film awards season starts next month, I will clearly be back on a once a week schedule. Of course, I'll be spending a lot of time in the movie theater also ... it looks like I'll be spending a lot of time there with so many films coming out to finish out 2001.

This week, only two items to address ... first up, we have a new film to preview as a 2001 film. With so many motion pictures being pulled from 2001 once the terrorist attacks occurred on September 11, it was refreshing to hear that one film originally scheduled for 2002 was being moved up for 2001 Oscar consideration. And it could possibly be a serious Oscar contender, depending on whether the country and Oscar voters are ready to watch a film about a recent United States military action which has long been mired in controversy.
