Latest Academy and Film Awards News Sept 2001


· The deadline for receiving entry forms and supporting documents in the Foreign Language Film category is November 1. Prints must be received at the Academy by November 15. (To qualify, films must have screened by October 31 in the country of submission.)

· In the short films categories, entry form deadline is November 1, and the deadline for receiving the film print and proof of qualifying exhibition or award is November 30, which is also the date by which films must have screened to qualify.

· In the new category for Best Animated Feature Film, the entry form deadline is November 1, and the deadline for receiving the film print is December 19.

· In the music categories, submissions must be made no later than 60 days after the qualifying Los Angeles release opening, or December 1, whichever comes first.

In other categories, the deadline for submission of Official Screen Credits forms to the Academy is 60 days after the qualifying Los Angeles release opening, or December 1, whichever comes first. This form must be filed in order for a feature film to be considered for the 74th Annual Academy Awards.

Rules are reviewed annually by branch and category committees. The Awards Rules Committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Academy's Board of Governors.

And even more Academy news, just announced this week. A week ago, it was announced that Gil Cates, one of the most frequent and possibly one of the best producers of the Oscar show telecast, would not be producing the 74th annual telecast. He stated that he had taken on a number of big projects which would require his attention, and he would not have the time to devote to produce another Oscar show. So the search was on for a producer for the next Academy Awards. Well, their search ended this past Thursday when the Academy officially announced that Laura Ziskin, a well known producer in Hollywood, would officially be the 74th Oscar show's producer. This will be her first time producing the Oscar telecast. Ziskin herself was nominated for an Oscar just a few years ago, as one of the producers on the Best Picture nominated As Good As It Gets. In discussing the task before her to produce the biggest awards show there is, Ziskin said "In an environment where there is an awards show or two or more every week, the Academy Awards
