The Sexiest or Most Erotic Sequences in Film History: Part 1

Anyone familiar with this column knows that during the Oscar off-season, especially the summer, I like to put together special series of articles on various topics relating either to Oscar history (as I did with the 50 greatest moments in Academy Awards history), or the very best in film (like my 11 part series on the greatest motion picture sequences of all time). Beginning this week and through the next four weeks, I will present a new five part series which was in part inspired by my series on the greatest motion picture sequences. This new series presents my choices for the 25 sexiest, or most erotic, sequences in motion picture history.

First, let me get the obligatory warnings out of the way. Obviously, a series like this will contain language and discussions which will be of an adult nature, so parental discretion advised I guess to quote the MPAA. There will also be pictures from the various sequences, and as you can imagine, the majority of them will contain nudity. Believe me, nothing you'll see here in the next five weeks comes close to the more hardcore stuff you can find on the web, but be forewarned.

Ok, now into the series. My criteria for making these selections was basically selecting sequences from mainstream or independent motion pictures which used sexuality or nudity in such a way that either made them incredibly erotic scenes or contained a use of sexuality or nudity which ended up being incredibly instrumental to the story. You will notice that a majority of the sequences come from the more contemporary cinema, as earlier films tended to subdue any sexuality or nudity. There are a few that made my list though, as they still had sequences which even to this day are brimming with sexuality. It's amazing to me that to this day, Americans still have problems handling sexuality and nudity in motion pictures.

Serious and thoughtful films such as The Loss of Sexual Innocence or Eyes Wide Shut are still criticized and sometimes ignored, and the MPAA is still more apt to allow gruesome violence get through with an R rating, but they will threaten a film with an NC-17 if they depict sexual acts. Just last year, American Psycho was threatened with the rating of NC-17, and one would initially think it would be because of the violence. No, it was a sex scene between Christian Bale and two women which bothered the MPAA. What is society's problem with nudity and sexuality? Someone someday needs to really explain this one to me ... and lately, directors themselves will tone down sexuality and nudity to gain what has become the new coveted rating, PG-13.
