It's Oscar Weekend 73! My Final Predictions!

© Nicholas Moreau

Here we are at last! Oscar Weekend! On Sunday night, the 73rd Annual Academy Awards will finally take place in Los Angeles, televised on ABC, and we'll finally see what the Academy decides are the best film achievements of 2000. I still think this is one of the most unpredictable Academy Awards in quite some time, and we may be in for some surprises on Sunday night. For example, a groundswell is seemingly gaining more momentum for a surprise win for Best Picture for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which I had mentioned in this column a few weeks back. This would be quite a surprise, and a first for the Academy, but not out of the realm of possibility. Think about it ... it's getting all the hype and momentum, as it just passed $100 million at the boxoffice, a first for a foreign-language film, and has not suffered any real backlash. It's also fresher in the minds of Academy voters. There may indeed be history in the making in more ways than one this Oscar Night, and like I said, I would be thrilled to see it happen. What is most likely to happen, however, is that Gladiator will storm down the competition and be the safe choice ... ho hum.

Anyway, since it's Oscar weekend and we're just two days from the Academy Awards, it's time for me to reveal my final predictions in all of the categories, as well as recapping the major categories I predicted the last couple of weeks, and if you trust my opinion, perhaps help some of you in your office pools. First, let me recap my predictions for the major categories (for more detailed discussions on why I picked what I did, check my previous articles):

BEST ACTOR
Wow, still so tough to predict ... a lot of people think Tom Hanks, but I still have to stick with Russell Crowe for Gladiator, even though I'd be happier to see Hanks get it

BEST ACTRESS
No question: Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Benicio Del Toro for Traffic

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
This one has become tougher to predict thanks to the SAGs, but I still stick with Kate Hudson for Almost Famous

BEST DIRECTOR
Ang Lee for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, although I will be so happy if Steven Soderbergh manages to overcome this "split" discussion and win for Traffic

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Cameron Crowe for Almost Famous, a personal pick as well

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
