Well, thanks a lot, SAG Awards! Not!For Outstanding Performance by the Cast of a Theatrical Motion Picture: TRAFFIC Well first of all, I was very happy to see the cast of Traffic receiving the ensemble award, the biggest award for the SAGs, but I don't think this necessarily pushes its chances at winning the Oscar any higher. Now let's delve through these acting choices. The first big shock was Judi Dench, who was not on hand to accept her prize. Where this one came from is beyond me, unless the SAGs were feeling she was due since they ignored her in two previous nominations. I had figured Best Supporting Actress was pretty much nailed down to Kate Hudson, and it may still be ... but I keep in the back of my mind Michael Caine surprisingly winning the SAG last year, and going on to the win the Oscar, but I still cannot see the Academy giving Dench this Oscar just two years after she won it for Shakespeare in Love. Are all of these people seeing something else in her performance in Chocolat? I mean, it's okay, but better than Frances McDormand or Kate Hudson, I don't think so. Then Albert Finney won for Supporting Actor ... with Benicio holding ranks in the lead acting category for the SAGs, I was hoping that Willem Dafoe could win here, but the SAGs surprisingly went for Finney. As soon as that award was presented, I thought, okay, he is going to win the Oscar, but wait, who wins Best Lead Actor but Benicio Del Toro??? So we didn't get any resolution to the Crowe-Hanks battle for the lead actor Oscar, and then it made the Best Supporting Actor race look even more interesting, between Del Toro and Finney. Del Toro received a very enthusiastic welcome to his winning the award, and I think now that if Del Toro was good enough to win in the lead acting category at the SAGs, he should pretty handily win Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. He's a hot actor at the moment, and I think the Academy is really shying away from awarding these supporting prizes for "lifetime achievement", at least they have in the last couple of years (think Kim Basinger over Gloria Stuart, and Juliette Binoche over Lauren Bacall), but of course James Coburn won Supporting not too long ago when he had never won before. Finney, as expected, was
