My Final Predictions for the 73rd Annual Oscar NominationsWell, here we are, on the brink of the announcement of the 73rd Annual Academy Award nominations. Early in the morning this upcoming Tuesday, the announcement of the Oscar nominations will be made, and we'll finally know what the Academy thinks of this somewhat disappointing year in cinema. It's been a varied Oscar preseason up to now, with numerous films taking Best Picture prizes from the various organizations, and there are very few frontrunners, if any, so predicting this year's Oscar nominations is certainly a challenge. But as has been tradition the weekend before the Oscar nominations are announced, I will present my look at the major categories, as well as a few of the other categories, and make my predictions as to who and what will receive the coveted Academy Award nominations at 5:37 PST on Tuesday in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theatre. Oscar Nominations Morning has been a ritual for me now for over fifteen years, and it's always an exciting morning. The anticipation of who and what will make history by receiving Academy Award nominations ... sometimes the excitement to see if some of my personal favorites will be up for Oscars, and of course, sometimes the disappointment when the Academy fails to honor a film or a performance that really should have been mentioned. That's all a part of the excitement of the Oscars, and I'll be there again this Tuesday morning, waiting in anticipation as always. Ok, now to the predictions ... let's start with the always tough Supporting Acting categories first. A few weeks ago, I already revealed my own personal choices in these categories if I got a vote, but this week, it's time to solidify my predictions for who and what I think will be nominated on Tuesday. Let's start with Best Supporting Actor. I think we have two actors for sure who are definite locks to receive nominations. Willem Dafoe will receive a nomination for his incredible performance as Max Schreck in Shadow of the Vampire. And even though the Screen Actors Guild entered him as a Lead Actor, I think it's safe to say that Benicio del Toro will receive a nod here for his great performance in Traffic. The rest of the list is much more difficult to predict. I think Albert Finney is a pretty safe bet for his performance in Erin Brockovich, a film which I have a feeling the Academy will warmly embrace. I also think Joaquin Phoenix will receive a nomination for his performance in Gladiator, although I thought his performance in Quills was much more layered and fascinating. Some are saying Fred Willard could receive a nomination here for his hilarious performance in Best in Show, but I don't think so. I mean, come on, was this really acting by this already gifted comedian?
