My Choices for the Best Individual Achievements of 2000

This weekend, the Golden Globe awards have finally arrived ... they will be broadcast live on NBC on Sunday night. The precursor season is typically divided into two distinct halves ... December through mid January is all of the critics coming out with their choices. The Golden Globes signify a change in the precursor awards, as we will now get some better predictors as to who and what will have the momentum to get Oscar nominations in just a few weeks.

Shortly after the Globes, the various Guilds will start announcing their nominees, and now we get to fellow industry peers nominating fellow peers for their work, which is exactly what the Academy Awards is. So things should hopefully start to organize here shortly, and we should have a pretty good idea on the frontrunners, and finally, on February 13, Oscar 73 will begin.

First up this week, two organizations that honor peers have already announced their nominees. This past week, the Producers Guild nominated their five pictures for Best Produced Films of the year. Sometimes, this is a good precursor as to what may get the five slots for Best Picture, but not always. But looking at this list, this could very well be our five nominees for Best Picture, which does not bode well for Traffic, a film which came out strong and may unfortunately be losing some steam ... we'll have to see if the Globes honor that film.

PRODUCERS GUILD NOMINATIONS FOR BEST PICTURE
Almost Famous
Billy Elliot
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Erin Brockovich
Gladiator

I know I haven't been trumpeting high Oscar chances for Billy Elliot, but it could very well be up for Oscar's top prize. Still I can't imagine them putting in that film over films like Traffic, You Can Count On Me, or even Cast Away, but who knows. From such an interesting year, more interesting choices may be ahead.

Also this past week, the American Cinema Editors announced their nominees for the best edited feature films of 2000, and I think it's safe to say we'll see the Best Film Editing Oscar nominees coming from these ten nominees.

AMERICAN CINEMA EDITORS (ACE) NOMINEES

Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic):
Billy Elliot
Cast Away
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Gladiator
Traffic

Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy or Musical):
Almost Famous
Best in Show
Chocolat
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Shanghai Noon

A couple of summer films could also end up getting a Film Editing Oscar nod, most notably The Perfect Storm and Mission: Impossible 2.

Well, I've been discussing and commenting on the choices made by other critics and organizations since December. Now it's time for me to discuss my own personal choices for the best in film for 2000, and I'll do this in two parts. This week, I'll reveal category by category who I feel deserves to win for 2000 -- not who I predict will win, but my own personal choices for who and what I thought was the best. Next week, I'll reveal my list of the ten best films of the year.
