A Defense of Liberalism Through Film

You know, they all are saying that Al Gore is so desperate to gain the White House ... I say these Republican conservatives are the desperate ones, spreading such hate as they have done so well in the past, and instead of allowing intelligent debate and discussion with Democrats and liberals, cutting them off and insulting them.

Instead of hurling back insults (which I could easily do), I instead feel a need to redefine for these pinheads (sorry, had to get in one there) exactly what it is to be a liberal and/or a Democrat, and why most of us detest the policies and political thoughts of Republicans and conservatives, and why I believe, liberalism is the only true political philosophy which is truly the most American, and the most true to what we are as human beings.

Now I could write pages and pages on what I feel liberalism is, and I in fact, may do so very soon if these attacks keep up. But to keep this column dedicated to what we discuss, Academy Awards and great films, I shall define for you why I am a liberal and why I feel so passionate about the liberal philosophy through what I love best, the movies. Below, I shall discuss briefly groups of films that I feel contain the best ideas of why I am a liberal, and why liberalism is the truest American and human philosophy. If you sit down and watch all of these wonderful films, you will get an idea of why those of us who call ourselves liberal feel so passionate about it.

The Contender -- Starting off with this new release from just a few weeks ago, this is the most perfect clear example of Democrats vs. Republicans, as Joan Allen portrays a liberal Vice-Presidential candidate who displays some of the best ideas of being a liberal. It also vividly portrays how some Republicans were acting during the whole Clinton sex scandal/impeachment proceedings. It also shows that not all Democrats are lazy or stupid, as so many contend. In fact, the stupid ones are the ones across the aisle in this bold and honest film.

The People vs. Larry Flynt -- This 1996 film deals with one of the most passionate issues for liberals, and me in particular, our freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment. This film portrays a true American hero, Larry Flynt, and his battle
