Award News This Week and Oscar Marketing Campaigns Underway

It's hard to believe that it's only a couple of weeks now until the first organizations begin handing out their awards for the best achievements in film. At the end of this week's article, I will post a schedule of the important precursor awards for 2000 leading up to the Oscars, so you can follow along as the awards season gets underway.

Filmwise, things will slow down a little bit in the release schedule now, until after Thanksgiving, when we'll get the final push of Oscar-contending films up to the December 31 deadline. Ron Howard's live action adaptation of HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS opens this weekend, and next week I'll share my reactions to it and handicap its Oscar chances. Arnold Schwarzenegger's new film THE 6TH DAY also opens, but I don't think we'll see that film in the Oscar race.

Now on to the news this week, more general awards related than Oscar related. Two honorary award winners have been selected, and both are very well deserved. First, one of the most prestigious lifetime achievement awards is presented by the American Film Institute. For next year's award to be presented on February 22, the AFI has announced that acclaimed film director and performer Barbra Streisand will receive that honor, becoming the first female film director to receive the honor. Streisand has already won two Academy Awards, 10 Golden Globes, 10 Grammys, two Peabody Awards, three Emmys and a Tony. Her directing achievements include YENTL, THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES, and the Oscar nominated Best Picture THE PRINCE OF TIDES.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which awards the Golden Globes, announced this week that will be giving their Cecil B. Demille Lifetime Achievement Honor to one of our greatest living actors, Al Pacino. Pacino has won two best actor Globes for his performances in "Scent of a Woman" and "Serpico" and has received 13 Globe nominations during his 30-year career. Pacino took home an Oscar for his role in "Scent of a Woman." I was very thrilled to hear about this well deserved honor. Pacino will receive that award during the Globe's 58th Annual banquet, scheduled for January 21 in Los Angeles, and airing on NBC.

Speaking of scheduled dates, it's time to reveal the list of important dates leading up to the Academy Awards in March. The whole four month awards season will begin in just a couple of weeks, and we'll begin to see what films start right off with the momentum for Oscar consideration.
