Golden Globes and the Other Movie Guild Nominations

We're now less than two weeks away from the announcement of the 72nd Annual Academy Award nominations. It's definitely full swing Oscar season now, as much discussion has emerged over who will get nominated when the choices are announced on February 15.

Over the past two weeks,  the ten best films of the year were presented in this column, a number of major precursor awards have been given, and let's start right off with one of the biggest precursors, the Golden Globe awards.

Well, they made some predictable choices alongside some very surprising choices. Being John Malkovich being completely overlooked and that has been the biggest surprise.

Best Movie Musical or Comedy went to Toy Story 2 and Ennio Morricone for Best Music Score to The Legend of 1900? So undeserved over the other nominees! This might have been be Randy Newman's year for Song with the beautiful song to Toy Story 2, but instead Phil Collins took it for the song from Tarzan.

It makes some of the Oscar categories still tough to predict, but the clear front runners now are American Beauty for Best Picture, Hilary Swank for Actress, Tom Cruise for Supporting Actor, American Beauty for Screenplay, and definitely All About my Mother for Foreign Film.

It is interesting that American Beauty is the front runner, especially since it was thought the film would be too dark for Academy's tastes, and now after so much acclaim, it's a frontrunner. Best Actor is even tougher to predict now. It was thought it would be between Kevin Spacey and Russell Crowe, but it's a three way race now that Denzel Washington won the Globe.
